The most common horse clothing purchased is horse rugs, horse bridles, and horse saddles. Of course, there are a lot more to buy, but these are a few of the main pieces. There are different types of each of these, which means you should read about what each one is used for before getting them, because you may end up with the wrong one!
Horse rugs are used for many things, usually all similar, such as keeping the horse warm, clean, protected from insects, protected from heat threats, or even from cold temperatures. The four common categories of rugs are anti-sweat, fly, stable, and turnout rugs.
An anti-sweat rug is a cotton mesh rug used to prevent the horse having chills when cooling down, after exercise or any other event. This rug can also be used to prevent irritation of flies and other insects depending on the thickness of the cotton mesh. An alternative to this would be a fleece or cooler rug. A fly rug is a fine, lightweight, mesh rug which can prevent irritation of flies and other insects, prevent the horse getting dirty, and can also prevent sun burns. The fly rug often includes a belly flap to attach to it to protect the horses belly, too. The stable rug is a padded synthetic rug designed to be worn inside the stable, which means it is not water proof. The stable rug comes in different thicknesses since it has the main aim of keeping the horse warm and clean inside the stable. It is fastened by surcingle and allows the horse movement space and is breathable. Finally, the turnout rug is a waterproof rug designed to keep the horse clean and dry in the field, and to keep warm in the winter. It is lightweight, but may easily tear on branches, etc. The rug is fastened using hind leg straps, and although it is waterproof it requires you to reproof it to keep its condition stable.
A horse bridle is a tack, made of leather straps, which holds in place the metal bit in the horses mouth and the reins on the horse, for the rider to control it. There are two main types of horse bridles. The two types are English bridles, and Western bridles.
For show-off competitions, professional events etc., the English bridle is usually used. This is because English bridles are mostly more stylish, whereas for general use, training, walking, etc., the Western bridle is used. You may also take into account what accessories you wish to add onto the horse when choosing the bridle(s).
To ride a horse, you need something to sit on! That is what the saddle is, a seat for the rider, to keep the rider securely positioned on the horse for whatever event they are doing. It all depends on you and your horse for which type of saddle you use, but here are many different types available. This means that whatever you are looking for, you can probably find it. You may also want to think about getting multiple saddles, because each saddler can serve a different purpose.
If you want a saddle to attend a jump event, an assault course of some kind, or maybe you are just training your horse for such things, then you may want the all-purpose English saddle. But if the horse is a bred-racer, then to compete in racing, or maybe just for training for races, you may want to use a racing saddle. A saddle for general purpose, for example taking the horse a walk around the field or barn, then you may need a Western saddle. Other than these, there are also saddles made to suit certain preferences. Just like the Australian stock saddle was created for comfort, and the reining saddle was created for its lightweight purpose, the treeless saddle was made for horses with wider-backs. There were also some saddles designed to fit preferences of the riders, such as the dressage saddle, which was made for riders who want a deep seat on the horse.
If you are new to having a horse, or you have had a horse for a while but never really thought about clothing or accessories, then you are right in reading about it because there are a variety of different horse wear to choose from, and to fit your preferences too.
